Start Time
To secure a ride, please turn up by the time shown in the listing. Start times shown are one minute before the scheduled start time for number 1. The start timekeeper will remain for as long as there are riders or as long as there is sufficient light expected for the riders to finish. If you arrive late your chance of getting a ride is therefore dependent on the size of the field. Please note that these times may be altered according to conditions on the night. The District Council have limited us to 25 and 40 riders for the first two events respectively.
Event Cancellation
The usual reason for any cancellation is bad weather or bad light. We always hope to run the event and cancellation is normally a last minute decision. Should the weather be generally bad the chances are that the event will be cancelled, but showery rain can be short term and very localised thus making it difficult to determine if the weather will hold out over our event. In these conditions riders will have to take a chance if they make a trip to the start but, if your journey is in vain, don't forget that you will be welcome to visit our club meeting nearby at the Horton Kirby Cricket Club. Should an event be cancelled in advance it will be notified on the index page or by use of the event dates table above.
Course
The course used is Q10/26, details as follows:-
Start at the east end of the layby on the A20, coastbound direction, approximately 1000 yards west of the entrance to Brands Hatch and 500 yards east of Scratchers Lane. Continue through West Kingsdown to the roundabout at the top of Wrotham Hill. (approx 4 Miles) Turn at roundabout and retrace past start to turn left on the A225 at Farningham. (Approx 9.25 miles) Continue toward Eynsford to finish at telegraph pole opposite first entrance to Anthony Roper School at Eynsford.
After finishing, riders must continue to Bower Lane War Memorial to turn and return back to the finish area.
Should there be a function being held at the school at the finish we may alter the finish location for safety reasons, although this is rare. We will probably use the Q10/25 which turns second left into Beesfield Lane after the left turn onto the A225 to finish about three quarters of a mile along at the junction with Donkey Lane. Last minute road works may also affect the event.
The event & course record is held by Gary Birch, VC Elan, with 20 min. 41 sec. on April 25th. 2007.
Entry Fee
Entry fee for 2008 remains at £2.00 for CC Bexley members and £3.00 for Non-members. Please pay the official at the start.
Conditions of Entry
The events are held under CTT regulations. Minimum age of entrants is 12 years. Parential consent is required for riders under 18 years old. Although CC Bexley will make every effort to ensure safety, it must be remembered that the race is run on the public highway, and it is up to the rider to obey the rules of the road. Riders will be required to sign a disclaimer (ie agreement to ride under ones own risk) before starting. Cycle lanes are in place through West Kingsdown in both directions totalling about 4 miles of the course.
Parking
In order to comply with the course risk assessment declarations, all cars will be parked in either lay-by near the top of Gorse Hill, in the Anthony Roper School Car Park at the finish, or in the Car Park of the CC Bexley Clubroom at the Horton Kirby Cricket Club, Franks Lane, Horton Kirby. Although we have cleared our parking request with the school authorities, we have no key for the Anthony Roper School Car Park so we cannot guarantee that your car will not be locked in there while the event is being run. As long as you are out by 9:00pm though there should be no problem.
Club Hill Climb and Freewheel Contest.
The last evening 10 will be held on 20th. August. We will be holding our club Hillclimb and Freewheel Contest on the following Wednesday evening, 27th. August. You are welcome to ride as a private entry. There is usually no entry fee for this event and you may ride only one of them if you wish. Stanstead Hill is the venue and we meet at the Stanstead War Memorial, OS ref. TQ 609623
The hill climb is self explanatory. Just climb the hill as fast as you can. For the freewheel contest you have to disable your transmission and go down the hill, not as fast as you can but as far as you can. There is a left turn at the bottom of the hill which starts to rise, and naturally checks your speed. The one that goes the furtherest without falling off is the winner. Make sure your brakes are good, and watch for traffic, gravel or other hazzards on the hill!
Cars may be parked in the side road on the west side of the war memorial. Please note that there must be no cycling on the course during the race. Riders on the hillclimb must continue after finishing until a safe turning point is found. Riders may wait in the field entrance at the finish by the timekeeper until the last rider has completed the climb.
Photographs
Photographers are often seen around the course and riders have later asked if shots of themselves are available. We have had official photographers in the past, but usually they are associates of riders, or maybe just keen photographers seeing us as an interesting subject. It is almost impossible after the event to locate the photographer so if you are interested in a print it would be best to ask around the riders and friends at the finish to see if he can be traced. If the photographer is commercial, he will usually make himself known at the start or finish.
After the Finish & Club Barbecue
After you have finished, why don't you come along to our clubroom and either celebrate your brilliant ride or drown your sorrows while complaining bitterly to us about our unsporting course and bad timekeeping. We are at the Horton Kirby Cricket Club in Franks Lane, about a mile and a half north of the finish on the other side of the A20. Most of us will be heading that way from the finish and we will be pleased to see you. There is no event on Wed. 2nd July, despite the fact that one is advertised in the SE District Handbook. Instead we will be holding a Barbecue at our clubroom where you can have a good fill of the tum, a few beers and bore us all with accounts of your racing season so far. You will be most welcome. We may ask for a contribution depending on the success of the series but it will not be more than about £4.00. Please let us know in advance if you plan to come so we can organise sufficient food for everyone.
A Thank-you for Riding at least Seven Events.
You can no longer take us for a mug if you enter 8 rides but we still have the bottle to ask 7 events from you for a free gift. A brand new genuine plastic 750 ml. drinking bottle will be presented to riders that enter at least 7 events in the series, or a lesser number if a significant number of events are cancelled. The "significant number" will be determined by the Time Trial Secretary of the CC Bexley. That will be a certainty this year as so many have been cancelled due to the road works. We may withdraw this prize though if so many events are cancelled that it becomes commercially unfeasable to award prizes.
