Cycle Club Bexley was formed in January 1966 with the merger of three clubs, the Long Valley Cycling Club, the Ruxley Wheelers and the Thames Road Club. With decline in interest in cycling experienced in these times, due mainly to the growing affluence of young people and the loss of older members from the boom years of the fifties as they all married off, the committees of these three clubs felt that a merger was a better proposition than the possibility of seeing our clubs fade away. The Thames and the Ruxley were based in S. E. London with the Long Valley based more in the Dartford area. We started our life meeting at The Seven Stars in Footscray, which was the last clubroom used by the Ruxley Wheelers.
Since then we have moved from venue to venue, at the same time moving more toward N. E. Kent. We have also seen a renaissance in cycling to some extent as well as some of these older members returning as their families have grown up ad “flown the nest”. Currently we meet at the Horton Kirby Cricket Club, Franks Lane, Horton Kirby. This is about 1 mile north of Farningham just off the A 225, OS Reference 677558.
The clubroom has a licenced bar, and we normally gather every Wednesday evening from about 7:30 pm. However, there has been some changes to our schedule recently due to manning of the club in winter months and our host, the cricket club, holding a darts league on some Wednesday evenings. We currently meet on Wednesday evenings in the Summer while the Evening “10”s are being run, and fortnightly on Tuesdays during the Summer. Please see the “Home” page for current arrangements. If you would like to come to our clubroom, please mail us first so that we have the opportunity to meet and welcome you.
Social activities such as darts matches and barbecues are held at the clubroom as well as the odd roller competion. If you want to know what we are currently planning, please see our “Home” page.
