Wednesday 6th. July.

After our rest week rather a cool windy evening greeted us. I did not ride as there was a lack of officials so I pushed you all off . (I wanted a rest anyway)

From what I deduced the wind was helping you to the turn, but then if you are riding you may tell a different story. Anyway, I saw that the new road surface has been laid where road works were annoying us two weeks ago, and the brow of the hill by the Ash turn is now much smoother.

Nice warm evening with little wind. there was a little cloud cover, but no serious threat of rain. Riders seem to be speeding up as the season progresses

Wednesday 20th. July.

Bit of a windy evening pushing the riders out. It was thus only hard to the turn instead of *$!!*??*8 hard. What goes up must come down however, and the wind was in the face back to the finish. Times seemed to show that this is the better direction for the wind. Apart from this the conditions were warm and dry.

Wednesday 27th. July.

The first cancellation of the year, so we have not done too bad. It was not too bad at the start, rather windy and wet, but at the top of the hill, especially at the turn, it was very misty. Added to this road works had started on Death Hill and the surface had been removed. Speed limits were in place and the whole thing looked dangerous. Nobody turned up by 7:30 so we guessed you were all being sensible.

The road works are not scheduled to be finished until 4th. August so they may still be in place next week. If necessary we will run the event on a short course, all else being ok.

Wednesday 3rd August.

If you did not ride tonight don't think that it was an exceptionally easy evening, or we were all in peak condition. All is explained below.

The road work signs were still in place with the 30 MPH speed limit still in force although the new surface was in place and there were no signs of workmen. The works team were at the bottom of the hill in the lay-by though and we asked about the situation. They said that white line painting was due to start at 7:30 which may cause hold ups.

With this in mind we decided to hold the event with the finish at the top of the hill opposite the start, about 2 miles short.

That said it was a head wind back from the turn again so it would have been harder to keep the speed up on the hill.

Welcome to new junior rider, Craig Wilton from Team Darenth. Only 14 years old but putting in a very respectable time. Perhaps a champion inthe making?

Wednesday 10th August.

After such a good year it seems that the end of the series is plagued with roadworks. After finishing on the hill last week they are now digging up about a mile each way of the course at West Kingsdown.

By the evening they had re-surfaced the outward stretch but only about half a mile of the return stretch leaving about half a mile of scraped off road on the return leg. At least the whole of each carriageway was open though. It was very uncomfortable on the trike and I lost a fair bit of time. I don't know how it affected the bikes. Things were compensated for though by a new billiard table surface down the hill.

A headwind on the return tonight which seems to be the favoured by most riders as opposed to an outward headwind.

Don't forget that it's a 7 o' clock start again next week for the last event, unless you want to ride our hillclimb as well on the 24th. August

Wednesday 17th August.

Not a bad night for our final event. A fine dry evening with a bit of a cross wind. All road works have disappeared and another billiard ball surface greeted us both ways through West Kingsdown. Pity they did not do further along by "The Portabello" on the return stretch as this is worst than that they renewed. The council may resurface it for us by next season though if we're lucky.

Our feelings are with Phil Bull tonight as he gave us a demonstration of how to come off with elegance as he turned left into the Eynsford road for the last halfmile. We picked him up and returned him to his car but he was more worried about damage to his disc wheels than his own personal damage. Wonder if he felt the same as he got up the next morning. (ow! ooh! ooh!)

Those that rode no doubt noticed that we did not charge an entry fee. As you had all supported us so well this year we thought it a fitting gesture. Thank you to all of you who supported the event throughout the year, as long as we have entries, and we are able enough, we will will run the event. Hope to see you again next year.

Don't forget we have our hillclimb next week, followed by the freewheel contest. It is our own club event, but it is open to anyone and there is no entry fee. Just be at the bottom of Stanstead Hill by 7.00 pm.

Wednesday 24th August.

What an awful evening, more like late autmn than mid summer. Very wet and windy with bad light. Even so 3 of our club and two guest members turned out, so we ran the event for them. The freewheel contest was also run despite fears of slippery roads.

The hillclimb results were as follows

PosRiderClubTime
1D. MorrisCC Bexley1 min 40 sec
2C. Wilton (junior) Team Darenth1 min 44 sec
3A. BrimLondon Fire Brigade CC1 min 45 sec
4A. ElfordCC Bexley2 min 20 sec
1M. MorrisCC Bexley2 min 21 sec

Mick Morris won the freewheel contest - as usual! Second was Dave Morris followed by A. Brim, C. Wilton and A. Elford

That's it for another year. Apologies for the late posting of the last two events. I had some problems with the editing which is why, as you no doubt have noticed, the results have been split between two pages.
