CYCLE CLUB BEXLEY

Wednesday Evening 10 Mile Time Trials 2005.

Wednesday 20th. April.

We got off to a good start this year with clement weather and a cooling breeze. In fact it was so good that it brought you all out in droves and caught us anawares. We thought we would be lucky if we saw 10 riders on the first night, but we had to close the shop with 33. (We should have done it at 25 officially) We must apologise to those we turned away, but we had the fading light - and your safety- to consider. We hope it has not put you off coming back for future rides.

The various bits of paper have now been collated and the results are as follows :-

The last two entrants were plagued with punctures. If there is any mis-spelling of names or any other inaccuracies (apart from what you consider your time should be - the timekeeper's decision is final!) please mail us and we will correct.

Due to a function being held at Eynsford School we shall have a slight alteration in the course next week. There will be a second left turn just after turning left onto the A225 at about 9 1/2 miles. the finish will be along the Knats Valley road.

Wednesday 27th. April.

Not so many riders this week. No wonder as until about half past five grey clouds were discharging rain and hail at an alarming rate. There was the possibility that the event would not take place.

Amazingly within about 15 minutes the skys cleared and by six o' clock we were set for a sunny end to the day ; just in time to bring the keen riders out. There was still a lot of surface water to contend with though and a flood across the road near the turn which had barely cleared before the first rider came on the scene. Probably as a result riders generally slowed a bit this week although times were good for the conditions.

We return to our normal course next week, finishing at Eynsford school

Wednesday 5th. May.

Not a very pleasant evening. A cold northerly wind and a rather overcast sky made things difficult but at least it was dry. Riders warmed up but Mick Morris and Ray Appleby were frozen stiff marshalling the turn.

Didn't seem to slow some riders though with some good rides for the conditions. Lets hope things warm up next week!

Summer has not yet started to shine. Another cold week with the cold wind swinging round to the east making it a grovel to the turn. Still seemed in your face on the way back though.

At least it was dry and sunny though which may have attracted our excellent entry this week of 32 riders. Thank you all for your continued support.

Hard luck Andrew Elford who though we were finishing in Knats Valley. Put on his best sprint to finish, then found there was no chequered flag or timekeeper so had to turn round, get back on course, and finish again at the proper place.

Wednesday 18th. May.

Things were a bit better tonight, it was not so cold or windy, but only compared with the last couple of weeks. The wind seemed to be coming from the north-east making it a cold grovel to the turn. It seemed much faster on the way back than last week, though.

A third win for Phil Bull this week. Well done Phil, and thank you all for supporting the event.

At last! A reasonably warm evening. It was therefore a warm grovel to the turn this evening for a change. The better weather did show on the times as it was generally faster this evening. Perhaps though, you are all getting fitter.

In case you detected the problems we had a week or so ago, we have renegotiated the agreement with the school at the finish as far as parking is concerned. If you park in the school carpark though, please ensure that you are out by 9:00 pm. The caretaker is entitled to go home after a long day.

Wednesday 1st. June.

A bit dismal tonight with the threat of rain. In fact it was a bit damp and murky at the turn but it was fairly dry through Kingsdown back to the finish. The rain kept off though, although the threat of it obviously kept riders away, and it was not cold.

The conditions seemed to slow those who rode.

Wednesday 8th. June.

A pleasant and bright evening brought out a record number of entries this week. The wind still had a bit of a chill though, but it did not stop some generally better times from our regular riders. Congratulations to Wayne Herron who produced a p.b. improving neary 40 seconds.

The first few riders (including yours truly) were held up by a farm tractor chugging along down Death Hill with a stream of cars behind it. Most got by ok with a loss of a few seconds probably, but I got squeezed in by the road islands. Once through these the tractor made an unannounced right turn forcing me back again. Very annoying but probably not as much time lost as it seemed.!

It just remains to thank all riders for giving us such support. We hope to see you again.

Wednesday 15th. June.

A rather dismal day cleared in the late afternoon to give us a dry evening but there was a strong cross wind blowing which seemed to slow the times down a bit.

It seemed hard to the turn but I did not experience the return leg as I jammed my chain inextricably between the chainrings when I tried to drop down to a lower ring just before the turn. Luckily Jessica Stoddard's mum was nearby cheering her daughter on. She kindly took me and my trike back to the start so I could find an Allen key to fix the problem.

Many thanks Jessica's mum for saving me from a long cold walk.

Hope to see you all at the start again next week, weather permitting. Don't forget that our BBQ is in two week's time. We look forward to meeting there at least some of those who support our event for a social chat.

Wednesday 22nd. June.

Panic early this morning when turning onto the A20 at the Labour-in-Vain lane for our Wednesday Wobblers run. Long queues of traffic at roadwork's lights by the Ash Road turning. Tipper trucks and diggers going at full pert on the horizon. Did we have this for our ten this evening? The posible good news was that they may be finishing off the bad road surface at the crest of the hill at this point

Luckily they were gone when I rode out to the start. The surface had been scraped off at two points, one at the point mentioned above, and the other at the dip just before the climb to the turn. Both sections amounted to to about 50 yards only. In fact I found the scaped off surface alone was an improvement on some sections if it was not for the ramp at each end.

Hopefully it will all be done by the time we return in two weeks - don't forget there is no event next week as we are having our bar-be-cue, where we hope to meet some of you.

Anyway, we rode at the end of a steaming hot day. I found it rather hard although many seemed to improve on previous weeks. I will use my hay fever and hacking cough as an excuse!

Once again, don't forget that there is no "10" next week. The next event is on July 6th.

Wednesday 29th. June.

Not a bad evening for the bar-be-cue. It kept dry at least and it was not too cold. it did rain as we packed up later that evening but everyone had gone home by then.

Good to see so much support, especially from the Gemini BC and we hope it was a pleasant surprise for all guests to find out that there was no charge as we had done so well on entries for the Evening 10s this year. We had to charge for the drinks though as they belonged to the cricket club.

Good also to see Pete Buss, our first General Secretary and Dave Barnes, an ex Thames RC member and founder member of the CC Bexley. Had not seen them for many years until recently.

Many thanks to all helpers, especially Ann Heaseman who prepared the food, and Mick Morris and Andrew Elford who cooked, or cremated it.
