Welcome to the Cycle Club Bexley Web site. We hope that our site will interest you if you have found it by chance, and that you find the information you are looking for if you came here by design.
We have an active membership who ride Time Trials, Road Races and Tourist events. We also enjoy social rides, and generally having fun in the cycling world. If you want to read more of our member activities click on "Club Log" at the foot of this page.
Although adopting the name of Cycle Club Bexley, membership is geographically spread over North West Kent, and we meet at the Horton Kirby Cricket Club in Franks Lane, near Farningham Kent. If you have any questions please mail us and we will try to give you a quick reply
Happy Cycling.
Notices and Forthcoming Events.
Back on Line
Many apologies. I was unable to do any updating for many weeks as my computer was ill. I have now nursed it back to health and am back on line again.
I managed to effect a cure just before our evening "10"s started and as you have no doubt seen this has been updated. It just takes me a little longer to get round to everything. I will update this page, but there may be some old dross at the end before I fully bring it up to date.
Many have said that they would like to see our website improved. I would like to provide a better one but I am no computer whizz-kid. If anyone in the world of cycling can help us out we would be most grateful to hear from them
Peter Buss.
The first notice to you is a sad one.
We have had notification that Pete Buss died over the weekend of 30th/31st May 2009 aged 73.
Pete Buss was a founder member of the CC Bexley coming from The Thames Road Club. He was their last General Secretary and became our first General Secretary, retiring in 1969 soon after he met his wife-to-be, Pat. He more or less stopped cycling then after a very active participation in time-trialling and social riding.
Pete Buss time trialling in the early days of the CC Bexley circa 1967.
We have very little information on his life since then, but we extend our sympathies to Pat and his boys Andrew, Stuart and the rest of the family.
The funeral was held at Eltham Crematorium on Thursday June 18th. If you would like to make a charity donation in his name, please donate to "Leukemia Research" or "MIND" c/o Welham Jones Funeral Directors, 31,Station Road, Swanley, Kent BR8 8ES.
Joan King.
We also have to announce that Joan King, wife of John King, died on Friday morning June 19th. Our sympathies are with John at this sad time.
The funeral will be held on Wednesday 8th. July at Hextable. The service will be open to all but the burial will be a family affair only. I will post more details when I have them.
The CC Bexley "Dave Ashdown Memorial" Open "10" : Saturday 16th. May 2009.
The event this year was again won by Peter Tadross, Ingear Quickvit RT, with a time of 21 minutes 05 seconds, two seconds slower than his course record breaking ride last year! Well, he is a year older now.
Another repeat of last year is that Reg Smith, DCB Kent, won the VETS award, with a plus 7min. 38 seconds, slipping back 17 seconds from last year's win. Even the longer standard didn't help in this case.
The Dave Ashdown Trophy was won by Robert Sapp, Medway Velo, wih a ride nearest to Dave's best time, (25 min 30 sec) with 25 min 42 seconds.
The fastest lady was Mrs. Deborah Percival, 34th. Nomads CC with 27 min. 56 sec., and the team award with 1 hour 09 minutes 52secs was taken by Malcolm Davis, Barry Stuart and Derek Howlett.
Ian Finch, CC Bexley, won the Tricycle Association SE Region event with 27min. 06 sec. with Trevor Oliver, San Fairy Ann CC, winning the handicap with 25 min.33 sec.
The full result sheet can be viewed by clicking here
Club Barbecue 2009
This will be held on Wednesday July 1st at 7:30 pm. All in the world of cycling are welcome to come and enjoy the company of the club. The bar will be open and the food will be plentiful. All we pray for is the sun.
Championship 25 2009 : Results
As usual this was held in association with The Wigmore CC "25", this year being held on the Chilham course, the "Q8". What we did not expect was that they would have a full field.
Ian Finch and Ray Appleby entered, but Ray was outside the event closing time. He was a reserve however and did get his ride on the day, but this may affect our choice of host event in the future.
Anyway, Ian won the Championship with a 1 hour 02 min. 33 sec ride with a +4.57 on his Vet standard. Ray did a 1 hour 15 minute 44 sec ride with a +8.33 on his Vet standard.
Bill Finch Memorial.
Two memorials to the late Bill Finch are now in place.
The first one is that the early season South East TA "25" is now known as "The Bill Finch Memorial". The event has been moved forward by about a month to the third weekend in April to try and catch some more spring like weather, a point which Bill never actioned.
The first event was held on April 19th. Bill no doubt still has some devine influence as the day was cloudy with a bitter, (but not quite so bitter as in previous years) strong easterly wind blowing.
With this first event, we hoped to attract a large field by awarding all finishers who didn't otherwise win an award with a special medal. Although the field was larger, we had hoped for a few more, and the cold conditions may have put off many from starting. None the less it was a successful event attended by many, including Christine and Caroline Finch.
Ian Finch won the event, which was a great tribute to his dad. It must be said also that he won it fairly and squarely. It was no "fix". CC Bexley riders times were as follows:-
| Overall Pos | Rider | Time | Handicap Time | Handicap Position |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ian Finch | 1hr 10min 16sec | 1 hr 09 min 16 sec | 10 |
| 6 | Roy Canning | 1hr 19min 29sec | 1 hr 08 min 14 sec | 7 |
| 11 | John Hastings | 1hr 26min 44sec | 1 hr 10 min 44 sec | 12 |
| 12 | Tom Wakefield | 1hr 30min 20sec | 1 hr 03 min 20 sec | 5 |
| 17 | John Healey | 1hr 36min 09sec | 1 hr 18 min 19 sec | 21 |
| 20 | John Coster | 1hr 51min 03sec | 1hr 03min 03 sec | 4 |
| 21 | Pete Granger | 1hr 52min 16sec | 1hr 08min 16 sec | 8 |
| 22 | Paul Ansell | 1hr 53min 48sec | 1hr 01min 48 sec | 2 |

The second tribute to Bill is a memorial seat. it has just been installed in position at Trosley Country Park near the top of The North Downs overlooking the Kent countryside where Bill did most of his miles.
There will be a short ceremony of dedication attended by his immediate family on Saturday August 22nd. 2009 at 2.00pm or thereabouts. The fine details of the ceremony are yet to be decided.
Anyone who knew him and would like to attend would be welcome. If you would like to make a contribution to his seat in his memory, please send a cheque to Richard Boxall made payable to "CC Bexley".
The bench now in position next to a neighbouring bench. Supporting blocks and ropes will be removed once the bedding concrete has set.
The view that the seat commands.
Charity Rides.
I am often asked to advertise charity rides on the website. I have decided therefore to list some of them on this page. Those that are local to our area, or that one of our members wish to support will be included in this list. I will put them in date order.
Medway Velo Club are running a sponsored ride in aid of Kent Air Ambulance on the 31st August 2009. The event starts and finishes at Boughton Aluph Village Hall, "The Iron Room". Entry is £10.00 per person in advance or £15.00 on the line. Details are attached.

Club Dinner & Dance : Saturday 21st. February 2009.
The 2008 Dinner and Dance went off well again at The Woodlands, Swanley. The Guest of Honour, Pete Wall, toasted the club after giving us an entertaining speech recounting his days playing bicycle polo. Mark Vowells responded after which the season's prizewinners received their awards. The evening finished with music and dancing.
We must extend our thanks to Debbie Boxall for organising the evening.
Clothing
If we want some CC Bexley clothing we no longer have to order it through the Secretary. Impsport have set up a purhasing facility on their website. All you have to do is go to their website and, on the home page, go to the "View Club Category" box.
Enter the club password, which can be obtained from Anne Heasman, and you may then see the range and prices of the club clothing available. From there you may purchase on-line using your credit/debit card and set up an account if you wish.
For those Luddites that are not on line, clothes may be ordered from Anne in the usual way, although she will purchase items as required and not normally seek a bulk purchase first.
